Ever had this happen?

I was working yesterday and a customer asked for assistance, I listened to his problem and was thinking for the solution and quite suddenly, he asked me, "Excuse me do you speak English?" For a moment I could tell my eyes were huge, my manager stopped what she was doing and had this funny look on her face and she must have been laughing.

So here I was looking at him like okay, what do I say, then I just said politely, "Yes...Yes I do," he jumped nearly out of his skin and he apologized, because i was being quiet and thinking about his problem. I told him the solution and showed him what he needed to do to fix the problem he was having with his lights.

After the poor guy left, my manager walked up and just busted out laughing and we walked out to the greenhouse and she just said, "Oh my...I can't believe that he thought you were from another country, next time just talk to him in Japanese and see what happens," she told me and I was almost laughing my ass off.

I felt bad for the guy and I finally said, "Do I honestly look like I come from another country?"

"No...that's the funniest part I have ever heard in my life," she told me and we just thought about it. I told her that it is rude to talk in another language, but also the guy was rude to think because I was trying to figure his problem out, that I was going to be from another country.

I suppose that can happen to just about anyone if someone isn't careful

Yeah, I think he did embarrass himself enough, I do speak at least 3 languages other than English and can use American Sign Language, I'm pretty sure he didn't realize what he just said. I thought it was sad he would assume that of anyone.

lol thats embarrassing, but funny! ^^;; I've had people ask me if I spoke English just because I'm brown and from Arizona, hehe, they assume I'm an immigrant. Then they get all red when I speak perfectly fine english and tell them I'm Native American! But yes, it is rude for anyone to assume things like that so don't feel too bad. Maybe you had a funny look of concentration on your face that the guy took for confusion or something? Silly guy, hopefully he'll twice before he blurts something out like that again.
