Customizing my profile

So I'm somewhat illiterate when it comes to computer languages and am wondering how I can add cool banners and stuff to my profile. Is there a specific code I should be using? I've been googleing this CSS codes but I can't seem to change my profile. Anyone have any simple instructions on how to do this or a page they can refer me to? Thanks.
