PC, Console, and Handheld games are all great. These days, many games have theme songs to them that are just great for listening to. Alot of games are also made with a story, from simples stuff like drunkards fighting to defying fate. This is a list of, in my opinion, the best ending and staff roll themes from games. Some from an independant game designer, others from big name companies. Probably the greatest gift to the player after game completion. All can be heard on youtube. I only include tracks from games I've played. This is in no particular order.
Staff Roll; Psychic Force 2012: One of my fav themes in this game is Purely Soldier. Staff Roll basically comes out as an arrange of Purely Soldier, so already I like it. For a fighting game, it just feels natural. The piano is just great, the overall tone is calming and makes it feel like the fighting is done.
Oriental Evening Sky; Scarlet Weather Rhapsody: One of the short themes on this list. The violin and brass come out great. For having to go through all the crazy, ball breaking attacks in this fighter, it's a good reward for completion.
Further; Iji: Iji is probably the only game with an alien invasion theme to it's story where I actually feel sorry for the invaders. This isn't VNV Nation's version, and it is slower. However, it does come out very well. From it's meloncholy tone to the singing, is very fitting to the story. The images shown during this end theme only adds to it.
Devil's Never Cry; Devil May Cry 3: Admittingly, the DMC series isn't my thing. Don't know why. That doesn't mean I will say anything bad about it's soundtrack. Hell, it's on my personal list of best soundtracks in gaming. This song rocks out with the same vibe that the game's atmosphere brings. The vocals that come three minutes into it really brings out this track. I have a video demo disc showing this game, which I used to play non stop just because this song was used for it. If you can't enjoy DMC 3, you can at least enjoy kick ass songs like this.
The moment of the rest; Axelay: Very calming. A theme like this gives the feeling that the game is indeed over. For some reason, I like this more than Axelay's credits theme. Though, the credits theme is dynamic and does deserve as much respect.
Star Soldier Vanishing Earth ending: Sorry I can't find a title, if there is one, for this ending theme. It still deserves mention. It has a great atmosphere to it, from the calm it opens with to the more energetic tone towards the end of the song, makes playing through the game worth it. The guitar especially brings out the atmosphere. You can tell what kind of game this is from that alone.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 ending: Like Vanishing Earth, I don't know if this theme has a title or not, but it sure worth the mention. Again, another ending theme I prefer over the credits theme. The song brings about an emotion that you are able to enjoy even without going through the game. However, I recommend listening to this with the ending simply because of the visuals.
Megaman X ending: Another one with strong emotion behind it. Especially when it slowly builds up, but still maintain it's tone. Very sad, but very great.
Smile and Tears; Earthbound (mother 2): Such a tone that carries great memories for those who played this game through to the end. The fight with Giygas is over, everything returns to normal. The song itself just gives that feeling that all is well.
Koibito no Inaiyoru (Lisa's Song); Soul Blazer: Yep, another one that has a bit of a somber tone, yet it's a bit upbeat. For those wondering, Lisa would be a character that grew very attached to the hero of the game. The scene itself is sad, with Lisa waiting for the hero to return.
To Far Away Times; Chrono Trigger: Very upbeat throughout, winding down towards the end, then into a music box tone. The fight is done, time to celebrate and rest.
To The Future; Lufia 2: Goes along slowly and the ending itself shows everyone you met throughout the game. Very soft and great to listen to. Too bad the ending is so sad. This song makes the ending alot more hopeful and less depressing. Good listen when on a rainy day.
Still Dawn; Resident Evil: That guitar alone is reason enough to like this song. While it is odd for something as upbeat as this to be in a survival horror, one would want something upbeat after going through a zombie mess.
Somnia Memorias; Parasite Eve: Very smooth, great singing, and gives a bit of a cinematic ending to the credits. Despite the overall action of this game, this song makes it feel more like I watched a good movie than play a great game.
The cat attached to the rust; Guilty Gear Isuka: Opens with an organ and whistling, then goes into quite the guitar playing. Alot of it goes into soft dips, but it's very upbeat and makes beating both the beatemup and fighter parts of Isuka well worth it. Especially with the visuals of GG Boost's ending.
Well, that's it. I'll edit in more or make a revised list later if I can remember more or play other games with good ending themes. Take a listen, you may find something you like.
