I have found that candle spells have had great success for me. I have always used candles since they contain all four of the basic elements.

I'm not sure I've found very many kinds of spells that DON'T work. I use elemental, candle, stone work, all sorts of sympathetic or symbolic magic. And many forms of ceremonial or have worked as well. I choose my spells (if I don't write them myself) based on how much I feel I am connected to the elements and focuses used in the ritual, not to mention the flow of the chants. If I don't like how it goes, I change it, or don't use it. *shrugs* Sometimes the best spell has no tools, though, but I still prefer to use them most of the time.
You sound very experienced. I agree that the spells with no tools are sometimes best. I think it is always best if you make your own spells. Then you can work it, and word it, specifically to your own feelings and direction. Tools are fun to use and they give a bit to the atmosphere of the intent that you are trying to send out. The only spells that I have a hard time with are the ones based on healing myself physically. I've had great success with most all of the ones I have tried, otherwise.
I have a question for you guys : How would you define Magick ? I never had a clear definition !
I define it as the manipulation of energy to bring about a desired effect. A desired out come.
Would you consider prayer as a sort of magick ?
Yes. I consider it one of the most basic forms of magick.
I don't do spells anymore. not in the sense that people would think when they hear the word. I've always believed that every thought and prayer is about the same, just not always the same level of intent. I don't cast circles, i don't use tools, and don't believe the supernatural is so unnatural, maybe we just have a lot more to learn.
healing spells mostly ^_^
the spells that have work the most for me are the healing ones, I use a blend of different systems to create my own.

A mixture of elemental and ceremonial has worked best for me.

I'm playing around with hoodoo lately. It's 30/70 success rate.
