I am getting really excited for the movie Thor and I was originally excited to see the Avengers franchise come to life. When it was made known that Thor was going to be part of the Avengers (true to the comic, nobody can fault them for that), something just didn't feel right.
The other day while I was watching The X-men movies, at three in the morning, due to excessive boredom and insomnia, on
Dish Network, it hit me. Some things work really well in the comic books but don't work at all in the movies. This is based on the concept of verisimilitude, where a movie needs an element of immersion and appearance of believability. The way that the Avengers is unfolding is setting the story up for a comic book transition that most likely won't work on the big screen.
Lets look at the characters that we know are most likely going to be part of the Avengers universe. Iron man, Black Widow, Captain America, Hawkeye and the Incredible Hulk. All of these are on a different level of believability. For example their powers were developed through Technology or enhanced training. As we make increases in Tech, the level of suspended belief necessary to watch the movie lessens. Now Thor is on the complete opposite as technology advances the level of suspended belief has to increase in order for you to believe in old Norse gods. The more one believes in Iron Man, the more he disbelieves in Thor. Comic books don't require the same level of immersion as a movie does to be successful.
In the X-mens wolverine origin movie we are in the middle of a great fight scene between Gambit and Wolverine. The fight balances on the realm of possible and cool, when wolverine cuts through four floors of fire escape. This was something that worked in the comic book but was hilarious in the movie. This is the same type of mistake marvel is making with Thor in the Avengers.
The next big problem is now you are going to have 5 big name heroes fighting for screen time. This is most likely going to fail. How many major movies have been made that have an all star cast and go no where? Marvel should have picked two or three major Avengers and then supported them with less known heroes from the same era. The Avengers have more than enough members from their roster that aren't super well known that fit into the modern day tech/human enhancement mode, that won't conflict with the others. Some suggestions would be; Shroud, Yellow Jacket, Black Panther, Iron Fist or Starfox. Instead we are more likely to see the next Avenger be, Kevin Sorbo as Hercules.
