War has affected a lot of people in different ways. If there are war veterans in your family and they carry any kind of medals or photos (could be from ANY WAR, not just WW1 and WW2), feel free to upload them here and maybe a short blurb about what the medals represent.
I think it would be interesting to see how war has affected people from all over the world

Permalink Reply by Ashley on November 11, 2011 at 4:44pm I have several members of my family who have served in the military and are currently doing so, and I've thought about joining on occasion.
I still think its atrocious to honor them for what they do and I find it extremely hypocritical the government says we should as they build ginarmous Taj Mahals of "Veteran Affairs" buildings while fucking these veterans over on the things promised to them. I have a hard time examining exactly why we should honor these people for helping to kill other people, especially when our OWN government doesn't seem to honor them. Well, okay. Maybe the president honors them or recognizes them when he needs a few more points in the polls.
This is my great grandfather. He served in the air force in WW2. He had several medals and was an honorary Texas Ranger, but I believe all of them were sold under the table at auction after my great grandmother died 3 years ago. I guess money outweighs family military "honor" any day or some shit.
But I like your little thing at the end here:
I think it would be interesting to see how war has affected people from all over the world
And I'd like to expand it on it by asking
How is "honor" different all over the world? What defines it in one culture, isnt what defines it in the next.

Permalink Reply by iSeeDumbPeople on November 12, 2011 at 4:13pm To answer your question, I don't think honor is that different all over the world. As far as wars are concerned, I think honor and patriotism go hand-in-hand. You receive your honour by fighting for your country's rights and achieving a victory
That's a real shame that the medals were sold, they are what defines your famiily's history in the war and what your family has achieved - I hope they earned your family a nice amount of money :)
I have a best friend from Russia and when they were leaving the country in the 90's, they were told the medals their family has earned during the World Wars must remain at home - but it might have to do with the fact that they were heading to Israel.
Here the Canadian war veterans are honored. There is a fundraiser every year to help military families and they are invited every year to attend Nov 11 ceremonies and each year a mother of someone in the military receives a Silver Cross Medal for her son's efforts. War veterans can also obtain a "war vet" license plate. I figured in the US they would be honored even more, but that I guess they are honored once they die in battle...what a shame.
Permalink Reply by Ashley on November 12, 2011 at 5:12pm There are some local places that help out veterans and military families a lot here. But they are in no way associated with the government. It's kind of sad that they help them out more than the government they fight for, but I think its the way it ought to be also. People helping the people around them because its the right thing to do.

why do we celebrate this 3 times a year? I support the troops but it is too much
if democrats are so smart why cant they fix economy? obama blows and he isnt a repub so where does that put you?
i bet you didnt think of that but its cool

Permalink Reply by iSeeDumbPeople on November 14, 2011 at 9:46am The economy was screwed from the beginning, especially in the US. They didn't think people would abuse the system as much as they did and that is what caused the economy to crash so much.
People were taking money out of thin air to pay for their bloated expenses and abusing the credit limit. A government that allows this is doomed from the start.
And since everyone relies on the US economy, everyone else is screwed too...
It's gonna take more than one leader to fix a crippling economy - much like it takes more than one person to pick up the pieces when a building burned to the ground. Anyone with some common sense should know this. I knew Obama couldn't fix the economy all by himself. It would still take years. How long did it take to recover from the Great Deppression....think about it...
At least Obama is doing what he can. You try leading in his place, it's a lot of pressure. Give the guy a break.

Now you tell me if that's too much :P
we should just limp memorial, 4th and vet into one day.
