well . . .
saying goodbye means you'll break it off but sometimes you don't want to break it off then comes sorry. saying sorry sometimes is too light to make things better.

OK, well if you really do want to break up with this person tell them you are truly sorry but you just wanna be friends. Maybe you guys were not meant to be together in such a way, but in a very different way, such as just friends. In my opinion saying sorry in your own way and really meaning it can be OK. I use to date this one guy, we ended up breaking up and now he is one of my best friends. Good luck!
