Internet Thought Sodomization Episode 2

Easy access to various forms of media has managed to replace the need of constructing thoughts. I'll make it a statement rather than a question this time, I am adventurous like that.

 

In order to make this thread actually entertaining by online forum standards, lets have live subjects.

 

Subject A: MEOW.

 

Subject B: isaah06.

 

There were other candidates for the role of Subject A and while I am making this personal I don't actually have personal reason for it to be so... it's just no fun when no one likes the "villain".

 

Now what we'd normally expect to see in a forum made out of WORDS, are words used for replies. Be it sarcasm, wit, advise, constructive criticism or random banter, words used to be the weapon of choice.

 

Language in general could arguably be our proudest achievement, it helps us think and such.

 

However what has been an epidemic with the technological advances is to express your personal thoughts in the form of images and videos created by someone else. This is where Subject A comes in. You COULD be actually thinking of how to say what you need to say, but why bother? Why, you could simply go online and find somebody else expressing what you think with a humorous image! You didn't have to think, people laugh, everyone wins.

 

Now by the way I am not saying that Subject A never actually talks, fuck off if that's  your main counter argument. I am saying the use of other media is excessive. And I won't accept proportional statistics of their image vs words usage, it's a bloody example.

 

Subject B on the other hand is "old school", though I am terrified to use that expression for this subject. I don't always agree with Subject B, but I admire his dedication to actually saying and explaining what he means consistently.

 

I guess I have to make this a question for it to be a discussion rather than a rant.

I think certain people using more pictures than words in general is fine. Honestly, I'd rather see a relevant, witty, (although not original) picture as a response to a post than a reply that's simply just "lol agree completeley" or "FUKK DAT SHIT" or some other vapid 3 word fragment. While I obviously would prefer it if everyone could write paragraph responses outlining their opinions on a thread, giving examples, and posing questions of their own, some people just... can't write, or express themselves well enough. Personally I think it's the person's opinions that count, everything's already been said by somebody else anyway. Every repost is a repost of a repost.  I think the bigger problem on this site in particular, if we're making this relevant/"live" is that people will state their opinion, and then nobody will go through and refute anyone else. If someone does, they very rarely get a response, but more of an attack, and no discussing gets done, just stupid e-fighting. I have threads I want to post that are ethics/morality related but I know they'll all just die because nobody wants to get ridiculed or think anymore. I guess the multitude of pictures adds to that though, because it's difficult to respond to just a captioned picture. This has been sort of rambly, but I think I answered the question?

How much of that is boredom with the site, and how much is essentially stupidity? I mean, that's what the inability to express thoughts properly and consistently actually is when it comes down to it, right? You could argue that not many people are willing to sit down and write a paragraph because they don't care enough, but at the same time if they were a bit smarter it shouldn't have been all that hard. It's hard to tell, I am lazy and stupid sometimes too and can't find the motivation to post a proper reply. At the end of the day the users make the community, so it's hard to blame the site for being boring.

As you've made the connection at the end of your reply, the picture or the video kill the conversation just as much as silence, and I think I'd rather take the silence. I'd rather think that no one cared about my post, than knowing that they tried to reply but were too stupid to actually say something.

You should post your threads. At least I'll try to reply, and who knows many that'll attract someone else to thinking and typing.

Honestly, at this point I think it's mostly intimidation. There's people on this site who will take any opportunity to attack someone, just because they're not a reg or they have a different opinion, and there's always those few who will jump right in. Then there's people like you, who reply thoroughly and elegantly, which I know sometimes can make me feel intimidated to respond. People don't like to feel stupid. I can understand posting a picture that you find to be relevant, which is also funny, because people always like funny, and you're less likely to get attacked if people are laughing. People need to grow some balls, and other people need to stop being so aggressive, and give people a chance to get a feel for Bolt before they get run out of it.

One day I sincerely hope that someone will explain to me how me having a "real" public profile would give you some sort of comfort, or advantage, or quite honestly I am not even sure where you are going with it all.

By the virtue of the fact that this place is public and welcomes new users, and by the fact that it is basically made by the contents that these users put here, the "ownership" (all though a pretty odd and wrong word to use) is divided equally.
