Zombies are a place-holder for other social fears. Every decade or so zombie movies get slightly modified subtexts to reflect the changing fears in society as a whole. They've slowly evolved from being about racism (an army of grotesque monsters displacing us and assimilating our culture!) to being about sexual politics (if you go parking with your boyfriend at make-out point, a zombie WILL eat your brains). They've been about drugs, and the youth culture, consumer culture. These days the zombies aren't even the "bad guys" anymore. They seem mostly to be about a group of assholes and arrogant pricks trying to survive shit they mostly brought on themselves or somehow deserved. These days the zombies seem to stand for nature, cold and unthinking; relentlessly purging a species that's so stupidly disconnected from reality it's trying to pretend everything is still alright, and the life that used to be possible is still possible, even as the whole world burns. So...my answer? At a basic level, we're afraid that our whole species is heading for a huge fall, and that we'll have deserved it.
I'm not sure people actually are afraid of anything except for not getting their own way. Everybody is so self-important.
Face the future, don't avoid it, or you'll never have a present, lol. : )
