when I've got a lot of research to do, like if I'm going to spend the next 18 continuous hours reading lab reports, it helps to have every edge you can get. Coffee helps a lot. So do cigarettes, vitamins, sleep, regular exercise...but I've also got this whole folder full of stuff that I've found through trial-and-error helps me with certain patterns of thinking. I put that on if i want to visualize ideas as geometry. If i want to see the subtlety of the connections between ideas, i put on I'll Sleep When You're Dead, by El-P
