Oh, you're right. I DID forget Deus Ex and Bioshock...I found Bioshock to be more steampunk, and less involved than System Shock. I liked Deus Ex, even if it was a little angsty and trying too hard to be intellectual ("God is dead. Let's see what items you have for sale...") I liked the sequel, invisible war. A decent story, fewer endless discussions where the two of you just quote Thomas Aquinas at each-other (cherrypicking the futurist quotes, and ignoring his raging misogyny...), the biomod system was cool. I still replay that from time to time, even if it is a little too easy. But...there where points in system shock 2 where i felt actual fear. Where my thinking was "if this where me - if i where in this situation...i'd find myself a nice nook, hole up with the shotgun pointed at the door, and just wait for the end". I loved the atmosphere. At many times it was emotionally difficult to find the motivation to keep moving. I liked that it got to me. In my guts.

*nods* The now defunct looking glass studios. Bioshock was it's "spiritual successor" whatever that means. They also made the Thief games, one of the best first-person sneaker series with an intriguing steampunk bent. I haven't played the new one, but i really should get around to that as the last one i played ended on quite a cliffhanger...

This is only in my opinion, because there are a lot of 'classics' and all those 'YOU MUST PLAY THESE' games that I'm not a huge fan of, but:
Mass Effect.
Any Fallout game.
Deus Ex.
COD 4, Modern Warfare.
Diablo I, II, and probably III when it comes out.
KOTOR (second one sucked).
